A Moody High School Student Displays Several Alcohol-Related Difficulties, Gets Removed From School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a seventeen year old high school junior who was exhibiting numerous alcohol-related issues at school. As a result, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to return to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to clarify his school expulsion to his Mom and Dad. His parents were "fairly conventional" and explained to Stephen that getting suspended from school was not a doable educational option. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would probably be like a lead weight around his legs that might harm his educational attainment for the remainder of his adult life. Moreover, Stephen's Mom and Dad were very disappointed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his classmates in the second.

It was obvious that his Mother and Father were out and out in full concurrence with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he had better come to the understanding that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his discussion with his Mom and Dad, Stephen finally agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his third period class.

When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she at once analyzed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related actions caused quite a bit of anxiety by the school administrators.

Quite frankly, Stephen was unsure why the principal informed him that he had to see a school therapist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking activities? Because almost all of his classmates drink as much if not more than he does, in effect, drinking shouldn't be such a big deal. Stated another way, if almost everybody is drinking, why is this such a big thing?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to short-circuit his ability to act like a responsible young man. As conveyed by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your pals drink beer, wine coolers, wine, or hard liquor does not mean that it's the best thing to do for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had underlined that summarized different drinking facts and statistics that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied chiefly to teenagers.

After Miss Pender presented the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was evident that what Miss Pender made known to Stephen was a real eye opener for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to put in plain words the short term and the long term outcomes of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also made the effort to validate what she was saying with alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that related to everyone, and principally to teens.

To be sure, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly understood why he should not be engaging in excessive and hazardous drinking with or without his pals any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she reviewed and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
